(P-B06) Effects of Perinatal Mental Health on Postpartum Marijuana Use: An Analysis of Virginia's PRAMS and PAHS Follow-up Survey on Maternal Health

The Virginia Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) and the Virginia Postpartum Assessment of Health (PAHS) are surveys of mothers who have recently had a baby. These rich data sources provide important information about the health and experiences of mothers and infants in Virginia. Using these datasets, epidemiologists and program managers worked collaboratively to conduct analyses revealing that VA mothers with perinatal depression/anxiety are 3-5 times more likely to report postpartum marijuana use. In addition to expanding on methods and findings of this analyses, presenters will provide a deeper understanding of postpartum data collection opportunities as well as successes and lessons learned in implementing these data collection systems, as well as opportunities to support future efforts to effectively address substance use among mothers experiencing adverse mental health conditions.
